Carina de Assunção is a PhD candidate and Research Student Teaching Associate at Falmouth University's Games Academy, where she focuses on gender diversity practices in esports communities across the UK and Portugal. Her work aims to develop best practices for grassroots esports through a lens of cultural comparison.
Carina holds a BSc (First Class) in Psychology with Interactive Entertainment from Glasgow Caledonian University (2016) and an MRes in Science and Technology Studies from the University of Edinburgh (Distinction, 2017). She has received awards including the Best Performing Student Award (GCU) and the Highly Skilled Workforce Scholarship (Edinburgh).
Her research interests span esports, representation in games, technofeminism, and actor-network theory. She has lectured on Games User Research and User Psychology at GCU (2018–2020), presented at international conferences, and organized workshops on gamification. Her publications critically examine gender dynamics in gaming, digital parenthood, and feminist critiques of game design.
Carina actively contributes to professional networks such as the Digital Games Research Association (DiGRA) and the Esports Research Network. She is affiliated with the Observatory for Sport in Scotland and frequently reviews papers in games studies journals.
