Can Alkan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Engineering at Bilkent University, leading the Alkan Lab for Bioinformatics & Computational Genomics. His research focuses on algorithmic approaches for analyzing genomic data, including structural variation discovery, hardware acceleration, and pangenomics. He holds a Ph.D. and B.Sc. from Bilkent University and a postdoctoral fellowship from the University of Washington.
Education: Postdoctoral Fellow at University of Washington (2005-2011), Ph.D. in Computer Science from Case Western Reserve University (2005), B.Sc. in Computer Science from Bilkent University (2000).
Research Interests: Combinatorial algorithms for bioinformatics, high-throughput sequencing analysis, structural variation discovery, and hardware/software co-design for genomic workloads.
Recent Work: Contributions to tools like mrFAST, TARDIS, and GateKeeper-GPU, advancing genomic sequence analysis and acceleration techniques. Collaborates with global institutions on computational genomics projects.
