معرفی
Can Firtina is an incoming Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD), and currently serves as a Senior Researcher and Lecturer at ETH Zurich's Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (D-ITET). His research focuses on accelerating bioinformatics workflows through algorithm-architecture co-design, with expertise in real-time genome analysis, hardware-software integration, and computational tools for genome editing.
Education: PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) from ETH Zurich, M.Sc. and B.Sc. in Computer Engineering from Bilkent University.
Research interests span bioinformatics and computer architecture, including:
- Real-time, energy-efficient genome analysis
- Hardware-software co-design for bioinformatics
- Nanopore sequencing signal processing
- Algorithm acceleration in storage and memory systems
His work has been published in top venues like IEEE/ACM Transactions and bioinformatics journals. He is a core member of the SAFARI Research Group at ETH Zurich, leading efforts in computational biology and systems design.
Future plans include hiring students at UMD to advance research in algorithm-architecture co-design for genomic applications.
