Cameron F. LaBarr is a Professor and Director of Choral Studies at Missouri State University (MSU), holding the endowed Clif and Gail Smart Professorship. He leads eight choirs, including the MSU Chorale, Men’s Chorus, Chamber Choir, and Grand Chorus, and oversees a comprehensive graduate choral conducting program. His international engagements span North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia, with recent performances in Indonesia, France, Chile, South Korea, and Spain. Dr. LaBarr has held previous positions at Lee University and the University of North Texas, and has received fellowships at the Yale International Choral Festival and Salzburg Seminar.
Education: BMus (Missouri State University), MMus and DMA (University of North Texas). His research focuses on choral conducting, international collaboration, and new music advocacy. He curates choral series with Santa Barbara Music Publishing and Walton Music, publishes arrangements globally, and co-authored The Melodic Voice: Conversations with Alice Parker.
Key awards include the Missouri State University Foundation Teaching Award (2018-2019), Springfield 40 Under 40 (2019), and Peace and Friendship Award (2018). He has conducted major works like Bach’s Aus der Tiefen rufe ich, Mozart’s Requiem, and Vaughan Williams’ Hodie. Dr. LaBarr has commissioned over 30 new choral works and serves on the board of the International Federation for Choral Music.
His professional activities include adjudicating international choral festivals, guest conducting in Scandinavia, China, and Canada, and directing choral festivals in the Czech Republic, Italy, France, and Ireland. Recent recordings of his choirs are available on Naxos and GIAChoralWorks.
