Calvin R. Cheung-Miaw is the Cordelia and William Laverack Family Assistant Professor of History in Trinity College of Arts & Sciences at Duke University, where his scholarship bridges intellectual history and social-movement history with a focus on Asian American experiences.
Education:
- Ph.D. in History, Stanford University (2021)
- B.A., Stanford University (2003)
Research Interests: Cheung-Miaw’s work interrogates how Asian American intellectuals and activists have navigated and contested racial hierarchies in the United States. His current book project, Asian Americans and the Color-Line, traces the rise and decline of Third Worldism within Asian American Studies, while a parallel project examines radical Asian American activism and transnational political murders during the Reagan era.
Across these strands, he explores themes of racial triangulation, multiracial coalition politics, educational access, and the transnational dimensions of state repression.
Recent Publications Analysis: His four most recent articles (2019–2024) collectively chart an arc from nineteenth-century Chinese community formation in California to late-twentieth-century debates over affirmative action and multiracial politics. Together they illuminate how legal, spatial, and ideological forces have shaped Asian American political identities and alliances.
