Joanne Cheung is a Lecturer at the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford University and the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. She is also an Affiliate at the Harvard Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society. Her research focuses on the political economy of digital infrastructure, exploring how digital 'public space' is financialized, how data influences community ownership of land, and the role of technology in transnational social movements. She is currently writing a book on community land trusts and climate change.
Previously, Cheung served as Director at IDEO, leading the Racial Justice Impact Fund and public interest design projects with organizations like Project Drawdown and the Knight Foundation. Her work has been exhibited globally and featured in Wallpaper, Wired, and the New York Times Magazine.
Her recent publications include collaborative work on redefining public interest in technology and analyzing power dynamics within datafied governance systems. Cheung’s interdisciplinary approach bridges design, policy, and activism, emphasizing inclusive and equitable technological frameworks.
