Dr. Joanne Armitage is a Lecturer in Digital Media at the University of Leeds, Faculty Associate at Harvard's Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society, and Researcher at the University of Cambridge's Planetary Praxis Research Group. Her work bridges digital media, activism, and sustainability, emphasizing participatory methods and feminist approaches to technology. She leads the Digital Cultures Research Group at Leeds and oversees the BA Digital Media program.
Her research focuses on environmental justice, gender in technology, and creative practices. Notable projects include the AHRC-funded Sus_NET (Sustainable Making for Feminist Action) and Protest!, exploring technology's role in social movements. She also contributes to the AirKit project via Citizen Sense at Cambridge.
Joanne holds a BSc in Music Multimedia and Electronics and a PhD in Practice-led Sound and Music Computing. Awards include the Daphne Oram Award and Francis Chagrin Award, alongside recognition for her artistic collaborations and public-facing projects like Machine Learning Imaginations and Automation and Me.
Her teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate courses on digital media theory, practice, and ethics. She actively engages in community-driven tech initiatives, advocating for equitable and sustainable digital practices through collectives like sus_NET.
