Calum Kerr is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Portsmouth, affiliated with the School of Film, Media and Creative Technologies and the Centre for Studies in Literature. He holds a Ph.D. from Manchester Metropolitan University (2005) focusing on hypertext and rewriting in literature. Previously, he served as a Teaching Fellow in Creative Writing at the University of Southampton (2013–2019).
His research interests center on creative writing, narrative structures, flash fiction, and non-linear storytelling. He is renowned for founding National Flash Fiction Day in the UK and explores hypertexts, multicursal narratives, and genre writing. His work often intersects with cultural studies and postcolonial themes.
Kerr’s publications include critical analyses of The Kite Runner (2020) and creative works like The Girl in his Home (2020). He regularly participates in academic conferences such as the European Network For Short Fiction Research and Portsmouth Comic Con. He currently supervises PhD students focusing on creative writing and narrative experimentation.
He is actively engaged in academic activities, including peer-review for Bloomsbury Publishing and organizing literary events.
