Caiti Smukowski Heil is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at North Carolina State University. She leads the Heil Lab, which focuses on genetics, genomics, and experimental evolution in Saccharomyces yeast. Her research examines recombination rate variation, hybridization-driven adaptation, and yeast domestication in baking environments. She is affiliated with the Genetics & Genomics Academy and teaches Population & Quantitative Genetics.
Dr. Heil earned her PhD from Duke University and completed a postdoc at the University of Washington. She joined NC State in 2019 and has secured a NIH NIGMS MIRA grant. Her lab actively engages in outreach, such as yeast-based educational programs and collaborations with local institutions. Students include PhD candidates, undergraduates, and visiting researchers.
Research highlights include studies on introgression, temperature effects on meiotic recombination, and yeast domestication. Her work bridges fundamental evolutionary biology with applied studies in food science and microbiology.
