Prof. Dr. Ir. C. (Chris) Smit is a Professor in Experimental Conservation Ecology at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Science and Engineering. He is affiliated with the Groningen Institute for Evolutionary Life Sciences and leads the Smit group, focusing on conservation ecology. His roles include editorial board memberships for journals like Plant Biology and Plant Ecology, and he chairs the Netherlands Annual Ecology Meeting. Smit holds a PhD in Biology from the University of Fribourg (2005) and a BSc/MSc in Forest and Nature Conservation from Wageningen University (2000).
Research Focus: Smit studies species interactions in ecosystems influenced by large herbivores and predators, emphasizing facilitation, rewilding, and predator-prey dynamics. His work spans temperate savannas, salt marshes, and semi-arid steppes. Key themes include the ecological impacts of wolves, feral cats, and human activities on ecosystems.
Recent Trends: His publications address climate change effects on salt marsh carbon sequestration, plant-facilitation mechanisms in arid regions, and meta-analyses on human-wildlife coexistence. These studies highlight interdisciplinary approaches to ecological challenges.
Awards & Grants: He received the NWO Rubicon Fellowship (2006) and leads major projects like CURVEBEND (biodiversity restoration) and TRICMA² (salt marsh sustainability). Collaborations include institutions in Poland, Spain, and Chile.
Advising & Teaching: Supervised over 50 MSc/PhD students since 2010. Coordinates courses like Research Skills Ecology and Conservation Ecology Practices. Current PhD projects focus on feral cats' ecological impacts, wolf reintroduction effects, and plant facilitation in salt marshes.
Labs/Teams: His team collaborates globally, integrating field studies with modeling to address conservation challenges. The Smit group emphasizes bridging fundamental ecology and practical conservation solutions.
