Chris Smit is an Associate Professor of Experimental Conservation Ecology at the Faculty of Science and Engineering, University of Groningen. He specializes in species interactions, facilitation, and the ecology of fear, particularly focusing on large herbivores and their impacts in ecosystems like temperate savannahs, salt marshes, and wetlands. His work investigates how biotic and abiotic factors shape ecological dynamics and biodiversity.
Education: Studied Forest and Nature Conservation at Wageningen University.
Research Interests: Experimental Conservation Ecology, facilitation in plant communities, predator-prey dynamics, rewilding, and the effects of large herbivores on ecosystem structure and function. Key projects include studies on wolf reintroduction impacts, salt marsh carbon sequestration, and long-term vegetation dynamics in Oostvaardersplassen.
Key Projects: Investigated carrion effects on plant communities, grazing management in salt marshes, and the role of facilitation in arid ecosystems. Collaborates internationally on global vegetation studies and decomposition processes in tidal wetlands.
Grants & Funding: Secured funding for salt marsh management projects, including a €2.9M grant for Wadden Sea initiatives. Active in policy-relevant research addressing human-wildlife conflict and conservation strategies.
Labs/Teams: Leads interdisciplinary teams in field studies across Europe and beyond, focusing on ecosystem restoration and biodiversity conservation.
