Cátia Tuna

Cátia Tuna is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Theology, Catholic University of Portugal, and an integrated researcher at the Centre of Religious History Studies (CEHR) and the Research Centre for Theology and Religious Studies (CITER). Her academic work bridges theology, cultural history, and music, with a particular focus on the religious dimensions of Fado and contemporary expressions of faith.

Her research explores the intersections of religion, culture, and music. Key areas include the theology of Fado, biblical conceptions of voice and fate, anti-clericalism in Portuguese music, and evangelical hip-hop in Lisbon. She investigates how religious identity is expressed in popular culture and marginalized forms of worship.

Her recent publications reveal a strong trajectory in analyzing religious ambivalence in cultural artifacts, especially music. She examines Fado as a space of sacred and profane tension, investigates divine and human voice in biblical texts, and studies modern religious movements through urban music. Her work often combines historical analysis with theological reflection.

She has received two major awards for her doctoral work: the Mário Soares Foundation - EDP Foundation Award and the Victor de Sá Award in Contemporary History.

Cátia Tuna has supervised student work at UCP and is involved in multiple research projects, including COLIVING2020 on intercultural living and public theology. She regularly presents at academic events, delivering invited talks on topics ranging from clandestine churches to religious freedom. Beyond academia, she is active as a singer and composer, enriching her scholarly engagement with lived musical and spiritual experience.
