Alfredo Teixeira

Alfredo Teixeira is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Theology, Catholic University of Portugal (UCP), where he also serves on the Faculty Board and has previously directed the Institute of Religious Sciences and the Institute of Studies of Religion. He is a researcher at both the Centre of Religious History Studies (CEHR) and the Research Centre for Theology and Religious Studies (CITER). He collaborates with the Master’s and PhD programs in History and Culture of Religions at the School of Arts, University of Lisbon, and co-coordinates the research network 'Religion in the multiple modernities' and the Manuel Sérgio Chair on Sport, Ethics, and Transcendence.

His research focuses on religious identities and institutions, the aesthetics and performativities of religion, and new theories of religion. Drawing from anthropology, theology, and sociology, his work explores belief systems in urban contexts, religious education, and the cultural dimensions of faith. His recent publications reflect a strong engagement with public theology, religious dualization, and the interplay between religion and modernity.

His scholarly output includes over 200 research works, with recent articles in journals such as Religions, International Journal of Public Theology, and International Journal of Organizational Analysis. These works demonstrate a consistent thematic focus on religious belief, identity formation, and the social dynamics of religion in contemporary Portugal and beyond.

Alfredo Teixeira has advised numerous students and supervised academic theses, contributing significantly to the training of new scholars in religious studies. He has coordinated multiple research projects, including 'Fragmentation and recomposition of belief,' 'Religious identities in Portugal,' and 'Religious Identities and Social Dynamics in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area.' He is also active in academic service, serving as co-editor of the Journal of Religious Studies (REVER) and as a member of the Artistic Council of the liturgical music journal Salicus.

He is involved in several research groups and networks, including the 'Religion in the multiple modernities' network and the Manuel Sérgio Chair, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration between theology, social sciences, and the arts. His work bridges academic research and cultural practice, particularly through his engagement with music and liturgy.
