Burak Demirel is an Associate Professor at Boğaziçi University's Institute of Environmental Sciences, serving as Vice Director of the Institute of Environmental Sciences (IESc) and Head of the Environmental Technology Division. He holds a B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from Istanbul Technical University (1994), an M.S. (1996), and a Ph.D. (2003) in Environmental Sciences from Boğaziçi University. His academic career includes postdoctoral research at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (2005–2008) and faculty roles at Boğaziçi University since 2009.
Research interests focus on biogas engineering, anaerobic biotechnology, and solid waste management, with emphasis on microbial ecology in waste treatment systems, nanomaterial behavior in landfills, and sustainable waste-to-energy solutions. Recent work includes studies on microplastics removal in wastewater treatment, enzymatic enhancement of biogas production, and recovery of rare earth metals from electronic waste.
Notable projects include a TÜBİTAK-funded interdisciplinary network for sustainable irrigation (2019–2022), microplastic removal studies in Istanbul's wastewater systems, and investigations into the environmental fate of engineered nanoparticles. His publications span 30+ years, addressing topics like anaerobic digestion optimization, heavy metal recovery, and landfill modeling using fuzzy logic systems.
Advising and grants include supervision of graduate research on bioplastic degradation, nanomaterial toxicity, and agricultural waste valorization. He leads the Environmental Technology Division, fostering collaborations in sustainable technology development and circular economy practices.
