Bryna Wortman

Bryna Wortman is an Associate Professor at the University of Rhode Island (URI) Theatre, where she has been a faculty member since 1999. She specializes in acting, directing, and dramatic literature, with a focus on Shakespearean works and literary criticism.

• Education: M.F.A. in Theatre Directing from Brooklyn College, CUNY; B.A. in English with concentrations in Dramatic Literature, Writing, and Literary Criticism from Barnard College, Columbia University.

Her research interests include classical and contemporary play production, actor training, and new play development. She has directed over 30 productions at URI and other Rhode Island theatres, including Fiddler on the Roof, The Grapes of Wrath, and The Great Gatsby, often followed by post-show panel discussions. Her work emphasizes humanistic storytelling and diversity in theatre.

• Scientific Awards: NEA Directing Grant for new play development.

At URI, she has mentored students in acting and directing, coached semi-finalists and finalists for the Irene Ryan Award, served on the A&S Curriculum Committee, and contributed annually to Diversity Week. She plans to continue directing, writing, and collaborating with artists and students in Rhode Island.
