David A. Crespy is a Professor of Playwriting, Acting, Dramatic Literature, and Theatre History at the University of Missouri’s College of Arts and Science, serving as Co-Director of the Writing for Performance Program and Director of Graduate Studies. He founded the Missouri Playwrights Workshop and the Mizzou New Play Series, earning the 2017 Kennedy Center Gold Medallion. His research focuses on dreamwork in dramatic writing and the plays of Edward Albee. Crespy has authored multiple books, including Dreamwork for Dramatic Writing (2024) and Edward Albee as Theatrical and Dramatic Innovator (2019), and holds grants exceeding $200,000 to support theatre initiatives.
- Education: BFA in Acting (Rutgers University), MFA in Playwriting (University of Texas), PhD in Theatre History (CUNY).
- Professional Roles: SAG-AFTRA actor, Edward Albee Society President, former Kennedy Center Region V Chair.
His scholarly awards include a 2018 Fulbright to Greece and induction into the College of Fellows of the American Theatre (2024). Crespy has directed over 100 student plays recognized nationally by the Kennedy Center and is currently co-editing a Routledge volume on Edward Albee’s impact on diversity in theatre.
Recent projects include directing Romero (2025) and organizing the Cachimbonas Latina/e Drama Conference to celebrate social-engagement theatre.
