Bruce Strong is an Associate Professor and the Alexia Endowed Chair at Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. He specializes in visual storytelling through photography, video, and multimedia, emphasizing cultural bridges and humanistic narratives. His teaching spans undergraduate, graduate, and military students, focusing on technical and creative skills to produce impactful stories.
Education and Fellowships: Strong earned a master’s degree in visual communications from Ohio University and held notable fellowships, including the Knight-Wallace Kellogg Public Policy Fellowship (University of Michigan), Scripps Howard Academic Leadership Academy Fellowship (LSU), and a Knight Fellowship. He also served as the first professional in residence at MediaStorm and the VII Foundation’s inaugural visiting scholar in Sarajevo (2023).
Research Interests: His work explores cultural documentation, global journalism, and the intersection of storytelling with community development. He has traveled to over 80 countries, documenting regions like Bosnia, China, Chile, and South Sudan. His projects often address humanitarian issues and cross-cultural understanding.
Awards and Recognition: He has won the Meredith Teaching Recognition Award (2010), Robin F. Garland Educator Award, and his work 'A Darkness Visible: Afghanistan' earned an Emmy nomination and multiple POYi accolades. His photography has appeared in TIME, National Geographic, and other international publications.
Advising and Grants: Strong mentors students who have won top honors from NPPA, POYi, and World Press. He chairs the Visual Communications department and oversees the Alexia Foundation’s international grant competition. He also leads workshops globally, including U.S. State Department-sponsored programs in Oman and Mauritius, and will teach in Arles, France, in 2024.
Labs and Initiatives: Founded Photo Night®, a monthly event for photographers, and contributed to MediaStorm’s Emmy-nominated projects. He collaborates with institutions like the Pingyao Photography Festival and the Eddie Adams Workshop.
