MaryAnne Golon is a Professor of Practice in Visual Communications at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, Syracuse University. She teaches visual editing and has over a decade of leadership experience at The Washington Post as Director of Photography, managing 17 staff photojournalists and 25 editors. Her team won a Pulitzer Prize and multiple other Pulitzer recognitions. Previously, she led Time Magazine’s photography department for 15+ years.
- Education: B.S. in Journalism & Communications from University of Florida (Distinguished Alumna), Duke University Fellowship in Public Policy & Media Studies.
Research focuses on visual storytelling, photography management, and editorial leadership in news media. Her work emphasizes cross-platform photojournalism and collaborative team strategies. Awards span individual and team recognitions from POYi, NPPA, and the Lucie Awards.
Professional affiliations include Chair of Eddie Adams Workshop’s Executive Board, Missouri Photo Workshop faculty, and international jury roles at Visa Pour L’Image. She lectures globally on photography and serves as a portfolio reviewer.
