Professor Bruce Smyth is Professor of Family Studies at the Australian National University's Centre for Social Policy Research. An internationally recognized expert in family law and post-separation dynamics, he received the American Association of Family & Conciliation Courts' Stanley Cohen Distinguished Research Award for his contributions to divorce and family studies. His research examines post-separation parenting arrangements, child support systems, and family dispute resolution.
Professor Smyth's current work focuses on children's experiences of home after parental separation, digital tools for co-parenting, and family law responses during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. He has served on government advisory panels including the Ministerial Taskforce on Child Support and Expert Panel on Child Support, influencing national policy reforms.
Research demonstrates methodological innovation in studying high-conflict families, ethical considerations in family research, and longitudinal analysis of separation outcomes. Recent publications address research ethics, data management, and pandemic impacts on family law systems, alongside foundational work on shared-time parenting and relocation disputes.
