Bruce Beutler is Regental Professor and Director of the Center for Genetics of Host Defense at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, holding the Raymond and Ellen Willie Distinguished Chair in Cancer Research. He received the 2011 Nobel Prize for discovering infection-sensing receptors in mammals.
Education includes:
- Undergraduate: University of California, San Diego (1976)
- MD: University of Chicago (1981)
- Residency: University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center
Research focuses on innate immunity mechanisms, including TNF inhibitors for rheumatoid arthritis and genetic mapping of immune pathways using mouse mutagenesis. His forward genetics approach identifies essential genes for immune function.
Honors recognize transformative work in immunology and genetics. Research involves collaborations across molecular biology, biochemistry, and structural biology to decode immune signaling pathways.
Leads the Center for Genetics of Host Defense, developing high-throughput mutagenesis techniques to rapidly identify immune system components.
