Bronwen Jones is a Lecturer in Sociology at University College London's Institute of Education (IOE), affiliated with the Department of Education, Practice & Society. She concurrently serves as an Associate Lecturer in Policy and Politics in Education and as a Lecturer (Teaching) for the MA Education program within the Department of Curriculum, Pedagogy & Assessment at UCL IOE.
Her academic credentials include a Doctorate from the IOE analyzing the 'whole child' through Foucault's power conceptualizations, an MA in Sociology of Religion, a Master of Research in Education and Social Science, and a PGCE in Religious Studies. Prior to academia, she taught Religious Studies, Philosophy, Sociology, English Literature, and Personal and Social Education in UK and Hong Kong secondary schools.
Dr. Jones's research operates at the intersection of critical policy sociology and social theory, specializing in neoliberal education reforms across UK and global contexts. She critically examines private sector incursions into state education governance and the biopolitical management of childhood, employing genealogical methods to deconstruct policy articulations of the 'whole child.' Her work consistently bridges philosophy, sociology, and policy studies through rigorous theoretical frameworks.
Her publication trajectory reveals a cohesive exploration of neoliberalism's evolution in educational spaces, with increasing focus on biopolitical governance, character education, and philosophy for children initiatives. The interdisciplinary nature of her scholarship demonstrates strong continuity in applying critical theory to contemporary education policy challenges, particularly regarding marketization and ethical space transformation.
Dr. Jones actively supervises PhD candidates researching policy enactment in primary mathematics, cultural institutions' role in UK arts education, and conceptualizations of pupil voice. She contributes significantly to UCL IOE's MA Sociology Cluster through core modules in Sociology of Education, Understanding Research Methodologies, and co-leading Understanding Education Policy.
