Professor Sam Duncan is a Professor of Adult Literacies and Director of the International Literacy Centre at the UCL Institute of Education (IOE). He transitioned from part-time (2005) to full-time (2008) roles at the IOE after prior experience as an adult literacy teacher in London. His work emphasizes teacher education, particularly for adult literacy instructors, and research on adult literacy practices, including the AHRC-funded Reading Aloud in Britain Today project.
Education & Background: Prior to IOE, Duncan taught adult literacy in London colleges. His research interests span literacy's role in adult lives, pedagogical approaches, and community-based literacy initiatives. He collaborates with the Prison Reading Group to support emergent readers in prisons.
Research & Teaching: Leads the Literacies Across the Lifecourse module on the Education Studies BA and contributes to Literacy in a Changing World. His projects explore reading aloud practices, informal literacy learning, and the intersections of literacy with folklore, literature, and religious traditions.
Awards & Recognition:Recipient of the AHRC Early Careers Research Fellowship. Active in the International Literacy Centre's steering group.
