Dr. Brittany McHale is a faculty pathologist and Associate Research Scientist at the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine, serving as Co-Director of the Infectious Diseases Laboratory (IDL) and co-leader of the UGA Zoo and Exotic Animal Pathology Service (ZEAPS). Her expertise spans avian, aquatic, and wildlife pathology, with a focus on zoonotic diseases and emerging pathogens. She holds a DVM from the University of Illinois and completed veterinary anatomic pathology training at UGA’s Tifton Diagnostic Laboratory.
Her research investigates disease mechanisms in wildlife and exotic species, including plastic ingestion effects on sea turtles, cardiac abnormalities in great apes, and novel infectious agents. She has authored/co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications in journals such as Emerging Infectious Diseases and Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation.
Teaching roles include histopathology seminars and necropsy practicums. She actively reviews for Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine and Journal of Wildlife Diseases, and served on UGA’s University Council and Human Resources Committee (2021–2022).
