Dr. Elizabeth Howerth is a Professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine. She holds a DVM (1978) from Michigan State University and a PhD (1986) from the University of Georgia, with Diplomate status from the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (DACVP). Her research focuses on viral and bacterial diseases in wildlife, domestic animals, and exotic species, including studies on bluetongue, West Nile virus, and Ehrlichia species. She has contributed to advancements in neuropathology, immunohistochemistry, and regenerative medicine.
Dr. Howerth has held leadership roles in professional organizations, including the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP), serving on committees like the Natural Diseases Committee and Examination Committee. She has been Editor of the Journal of Wildlife Diseases since 2005 and actively participates in wildlife conservation initiatives, such as the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project.
Her work spans diagnostic pathology, wildlife disease epidemiology, and zoonotic pathogen research. Dr. Howerth’s publications (over 300 indexed in PubMed) address pathogenesis, diagnostic methodologies, and emerging infectious diseases in veterinary medicine. She leads the UGA Zoo and Exotic Animal Pathology Service (ZEAPS) and collaborates with diagnostic labs like the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories and SCWDS.
