Britta Sjogren is a Professor in the Department of Cinema at San Francisco State University, where she has held leadership roles including Director of the School of Cinema (2015-2019). She holds a Ph.D. and M.F.A. from UCLA and a B.A. from UC Berkeley. Her work bridges filmmaking and academic scholarship, focusing on feminist theory, experimental narratives, and social issues. Sjogren has received major accolades including a Guggenheim Fellowship and Sundance Festival awards.
Her research explores female voice in cinema and the intersection of documentary/narrative forms. Notable projects include Redemption Trail (feminist Western), In This Short Life (hybrid documentary), and her theoretical work Into the Vortex. Current projects include Claire’s Bones and A Chain of Windows, exploring themes of identity and historical memory.
Sjogren’s teaching emphasizes curricular initiatives highlighting women’s contributions to film. She co-founded Dire Wolf Productions and has contributed to film festivals as a programmer. Awards include the AFI Independent Filmmaker grant and multiple Sundance honors.
