Brice Garrett is a Brooklyn-based contemporary artist and educator currently serving as Visiting Assistant Professor at Pratt Institute and Part-Time Lecturer at Parsons School of Design. His practice spans jewelry, sculpture, and participatory installations, informed by traditional metalsmithing training and community engagement.
Garrett's research interests center on material transformation, memory, and the emotional power of objects. His work interrogates relationships between high and low materials, production processes, and the social significance of jewelry. Through projects like Workshop (2016-Ongoing), he explores how collective making fosters community bonds and personal meaning, particularly examining how pandemic-era material shifts affect our connection to objects.
His recent exhibitions reveal consistent exploration of:
- Material authenticity and value systems
- Body-object relationships in contemporary life
- Community-based production models
- Memory embedded in everyday objects
- Post-pandemic material renegotiation
- Hybrid material practices (clay, metal, plaster)
Notable recognitions include residencies at Teton ArtLab, Stove Works, and the Jakob Bengel Foundation, along with support from Queens Council on the Arts and NYC Department of Cultural Affairs.
As an educator, Garrett has taught at Brooklyn Metal Works since 2013 and held positions at 92Y, Westchester Community College, and Syracuse University. His participatory projects like Impressions demonstrate his commitment to community-based art education, working with senior centers and public participants to create meaningful material narratives.
Garrett maintains active studio practice through Brooklyn Metal Works while developing new work exploring industrial materials and domestic object relationships, as seen in his 2020 Impressions - Eastport / Jackson series.
