Sherry Simms

Sherry Simms is an Associate Professor of Art and Coordinator of the Metalsmithing and Jewelry program at the University of Akron's Mary Schiller Myers School of Art since 2001. She previously taught at SUNY New Paltz and the University of Oregon. Her work explores jewelry and sculptural objects that challenge cultural perceptions of ornamentation, exhibited widely and featured in American Craft and Metalsmith magazines.

• Education: MFA in Metalsmithing from SUNY New Paltz; BFA from University of Akron.

Research interests focus on redefining jewelry’s cultural role through interdisciplinary sculptural practices. Her work bridges functional art and conceptual critique, often addressing themes of identity and materiality.

• Awards: Multiple Ohio Arts Council Fellowships, University of Akron Research Fellowship, Jentel Residency.

Active in academic leadership, Simms coordinates Metalsmithing programs and has secured grants supporting her creative research. Her studio practice emphasizes community engagement through material exploration.
