Renee Zettle-Sterling is a Professor in the Department of Visual & Media Arts at Grand Valley State University (GVSU), specializing in Jewelry/Metalsmithing, Sculpture, and Three-Dimensional Design. She also serves as the Gallery Director of the Stuart B. and Barbara H. Padnos Student Art Gallery. Her research explores the role of objects in processes of grief, mourning, and commemoration, blending studio practice with scholarly inquiry. Zettle-Sterling holds an MFA in Sculpture/Installation and an MA in Jewelry Metalsmithing from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, alongside a BFA in Papermaking/Fibers from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, with publications in Metalsmith Magazine, American Craft, and the '500 Series' by Lark Books. She is President-Elect of the Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG), an organization supporting jewelry and metal arts. Courses she teaches include ART 151 (3D Design), ART 245 (Jewelry/Metalsmithing), and ART 346 (Intermediate Jewelry/Metalsmithing).
Zettle-Sterling’s practice includes projects like Objects of Mourning, Actualities of War, and Studies in the Ephemeral, which interrogate memory, temporality, and human-object relationships. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges materiality with conceptual themes, often addressing societal and personal narratives through crafted objects.
