Brian Michael Murphy is a Visiting Assistant Professor of American Studies at Williams College and a Faculty Associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. His research explores data preservation, media archaeology, and the ethical implications of digital technologies. He holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Studies from The Ohio State University, where he was a Presidential Fellow.

His book We the Dead: Preserving Data at the End of the World (2022) examines data preservation strategies from paper to synthetic DNA. He has received grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Vermont Arts Council, and Ohio Arts Council. His recent work includes essays on racial violence digitization and a fictional narrative addressing race, digital technologies, and identity.

He has taught at Miami University, Bennington College (where he also served as Dean), and directed the Kenyon Review Young Writers Workshop. His current project is a novel exploring racialization, digital technologies, and the boundaries between life/death and data/biological bodies.
He co-edited a Media-N special issue on data afterlives and serves as a founding board member of Outpost, a residency for writers of color from the U.S. and Latin America.
