Apryl Williams is a multidisciplinary scholar and Assistant Professor jointly appointed in the Department of Communication & Media and the Digital Studies Institute at the University of Michigan. She is also a Faculty Associate at Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society, a Senior Fellow in Trustworthy AI at Mozilla Foundation, and an affiliated researcher at NYU’s Center for Critical Race & Digital Studies. Her work examines intersections of gender, race, and technology in algorithmic systems, with a focus on online dating platforms and AI ethics.
Her first book, Not My Type: Automating Sexual Racism in Online Dating, critiques how dating algorithms perpetuate racial biases rooted in eugenics and historical anti-miscegenation laws. Current research includes the co-authored project From Fair to Repair, advocating for reparative justice over fairness paradigms in algorithmic ethics. Williams’ research has been featured in Time, Washington Post, NPR, and other outlets.
