Dr. Brian Mark is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Manitoba and has served as the Dean of the Faculty of Science since 2021. Previously, he was the Associate Dean of Research from 2018–2021. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of infectious diseases, including antibiotic resistance and viral immune evasion.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Biochemistry, University of Alberta
- M.Sc., University of Manitoba
- B.Sc., University of Winnipeg
Research Interests:
Dr. Mark’s laboratory investigates the molecular basis of disease through three main themes:
- Antibiotic Resistance: Targeting bacterial enzymes like NagZ to overcome resistance in pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
- Viral Immune Evasion: Studying proteases from viruses like SARS-CoV-2 and PRRSV to understand how they suppress host immunity.
- Genetic Disorders: Developing enzyme replacement therapies for Tay-Sachs and Sandhoff diseases using engineered enzymes like HexM.
Scientific Contributions:
Dr. Mark has published extensively on microbial pathogenesis, structural biology of enzymes, and therapeutic strategies. His work has appeared in high-impact journals such as Journal of Biological Chemistry, PLoS Pathogens, and Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.
Awards & Recognition:
While specific awards are not listed, his work has been featured in ASM press releases and journal highlights, indicating significant recognition in the field.
Lab & Mentorship:
Dr. Mark leads The Mark Laboratory, mentoring a diverse group of trainees including Ph.D. students, MSc students, postdocs, and technicians. His lab has trained over 40 students and researchers, many of whom have gone on to successful careers in academia and industry.
