Brian Cowan is a Professor in Low Temperature Physics at the Department of Physics, Royal Holloway, University of London. His research focuses on quantum materials, superfluidity, and phase transitions in low-temperature systems. He has been a principal investigator (PI) and co-investigator (CoI) in multiple Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) projects, including those exploring topological superfluidity in helium-3 and quantum criticality in helium films. Cowan also serves as a mentor in recent Medical Research Council (MRC) initiatives.
His research interests include low-temperature phenomena, quantum phase transitions, and condensed matter systems such as layered helium films and confined superfluids. Notable projects involve studying intertwined superfluid states, spatially modulated magnetic phases, and the application of quantum materials to neutron-star modeling.
Cowan has contributed to 93 research outputs, including peer-reviewed articles in journals like Physical Review Letters and Nature Physics. His work often addresses fundamental questions in quantum physics through experiments and theoretical models, with a focus on ultra-cold systems and nanoscale confinement effects.
He leads or collaborates on grants totaling over £multi-million from EPSRC and MRC, demonstrating sustained funding in low-temperature physics. Mentoring roles in current projects highlight his academic leadership.
