Brian C. Freeman is a Professor of Cell & Developmental Biology at the University of Illinois, affiliated with the School of Molecular & Cellular Biology (MCB) and the Cancer Center at Illinois. His research focuses on molecular chaperones and their roles in maintaining cellular homeostasis through dynamic protein environments, particularly in transcription, chromatin remodeling, and genome organization. He received his B.S. in Microbiology from the University of Michigan and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Biophysics from Northwestern University, followed by postdoctoral training at the University of California-San Francisco.
Research Interests: Freeman’s lab investigates how molecular chaperones like Hsp90 facilitate rapid assembly and disassembly of protein complexes to avoid cellular dysfunction. Key topics include chromatin structure, protein homeostasis, and the implications of chaperone dysregulation in aging-related diseases, cancer, and metabolic disorders. Recent work highlights Hsp90’s role in targeting intrinsically disordered regions to govern client proteins and its impact on transcriptional networks.
