Brian Atwell is a Professor (Honorary) in the School of Natural Sciences at Macquarie University. His research focuses on plant stress biology, particularly mechanisms of heat, drought, and abiotic stress tolerance in crops and wild species. He specializes in proteomics, genomics, and physiological adaptations of plants such as rice (Oryza spp.), cotton (Gossypium), and kangaroo grass (Themeda triandra).
Key projects include investigating heat tolerance in Australian arid-zone plants, proteomic responses to stress in rice, and optimizing crop resilience through genetic and molecular insights. He leads or collaborates on projects like the Biomolecular Discovery and Design Research Centre and High Resolution Mass Spectrometry initiatives.
His research spans over four decades with 127+ publications and 3847 citations, contributing to understanding stress signaling, root architecture, and stress-induced protein dynamics. He actively contributes to academic events such as the Macquarie Food Symposium, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to agricultural challenges.
