Dr. Brian A. Burt is a Professor in the Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s School of Education. He also serves as Director and Chief Research Scientist of the Wisconsin’s Equity & Inclusion Laboratory (Wei LAB), and Project Lead for Black Males in Engineering. His work focuses on qualitative research methodologies to study graduate student experiences, institutional policies, and equity issues in STEM education.
Dr. Burt holds a PhD in Academic Affairs and Student Development from the University of Michigan (2014), an MA in Higher Education Administration from the University of Maryland (2006), and a BS in Secondary English Education from Indiana University (2004). He has received prestigious awards such as the National Science Foundation’s Early CAREER Award and the H.I. Romnes Faculty Fellowship.
His research interests include team-based research experiences, underrepresented graduate students of color in engineering, and the role of advising practices in fostering inclusivity. He has developed theoretical frameworks like the ‘Culture of Community’ model for scientific teams and a ‘Caring and Wholeness-Promoting’ advising framework.
Key contributions include publications on Black males’ persistence in engineering graduate programs, racial microaggressions in academia, and strategies for broadening STEM participation. Dr. Burt’s work bridges research, policy, and practice to address systemic inequities in higher education.
