Brian Burt

Dr. Brian A. Burt is Professor and Director of Wisconsin's Equity and Inclusion Laboratory (Wei LAB) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Education. His research examines graduate student experiences, institutional policies influencing academic pathways, and underrepresented students in engineering.

His work employs qualitative methodologies to investigate team-based research experiences and racial equity in STEM education. Publications explore research group dynamics, culturally responsive advising frameworks, and strategies for broadening participation in engineering. Research consistently addresses systemic barriers affecting Black males in graduate programs.

Dr. Burt has received prestigious awards including the NSF CAREER Award, H.I. Romnes Faculty Fellowship, and William Elgin Wickenden Award. As Principal Investigator of the 'Black Males in Engineering' project, he develops interventions to support underrepresented students.

His laboratory focuses on creating equitable research environments and studying effective mentorship models. Current projects examine research group cultures and their impact on student persistence.
