John Burt is a Professor of Biology at NYU Abu Dhabi, specializing in marine biology with a focus on the Arabian Gulf. He leads research on how marine organisms adapt to extreme environmental conditions, particularly in the world's warmest sea. His affiliations include the Burt Marine Biology Lab and the Mubadala Arabian Center for Climate and Environmental Sciences. Burt chairs the Mideast Coral Reef Society and advises UAE government bodies on climate and conservation policies.
Education: PhD and MS from the University of Windsor (Canada), BS from Cape Breton University (Canada), and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) from the University of Sunderland (UK). His work spans coral reef resilience, mangrove ecology, and climate change impacts, with a commitment to translating science into policy. Key achievements include the 2017 Sheikh Mubarak Al Nahyan Award and the 2022 Transformative Research Award.
Research interests include coral symbiosis, reef fish physiology, and coastal urbanization effects. He collaborates with regional governments and industries, providing expertise in marine conservation and sustainable development. Courses taught include Ecology, Biostatistics, and interdisciplinary studies on coastal environments.
Awards highlight his contributions to UAE marine awareness and scientific leadership. His book A Natural History of the Emirates (2023) is a public-facing resource on local ecosystems. Burt's lab and affiliated centers emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to environmental challenges, blending genomics, ecology, and policy.
