Karina Scavo Lord is a Lecturer in Biology and a core member of the Boston University Marine Program (BUMP) at Boston University. She holds a PhD from Boston University and conducts research in collaboration with the Finnerty and Novak labs. Her work focuses on coral adaptation and resilience in mangrove and seagrass ecosystems, as well as eelgrass thermal tolerance and coastal ecosystem restoration.
Her research explores how corals interact with non-reef habitats like mangroves and seagrass meadows, emphasizing their role as 'resilience reservoirs' under climate change. In parallel, she investigates eelgrass populations' genomic responses to rising temperatures, informing conservation strategies. She teaches courses including MR 500: Marine Intertidal Ecology, MR 533: Scientific Diving, and BI 306: Biology of Global Change.
Her recent studies highlight phenotypic and genetic differences in corals across habitats, the viability of mangrove-root coral populations, and microplastic impacts on eelgrass meadows. She actively seeks to expand research into New England's subtidal and intertidal ecosystems.
Dr. Lord collaborates extensively with marine conservation initiatives and has advised undergraduate researchers in field and lab settings. Her work bridges ecological, genomic, and applied conservation approaches to address global marine challenges.
