Alyssa Novak is a Research Assistant Professor at Boston University's College of Arts and Sciences, specializing in coastal ecology and conservation. Her work focuses on seagrass and saltmarsh ecosystems, addressing climate change impacts, restoration, and resilience. She teaches courses like Coastal Ecosystems and Tropical Seagrass Ecology. Dr. Novak's research spans Massachusetts' Great Marsh, Cape Cod, and islands, emphasizing carbon sequestration, stress responses, and microplastic impacts. She has advised numerous students and collaborates widely on initiatives like the Great Marsh Partnership and the Green Crab R&D Project.
Education:
- Ph.D., Natural Resources and Earth Sciences (Oceanography), University of New Hampshire (2011)
- M.S., Environmental Science (GIS/Remote Sensing), University of Rhode Island
- B.A., Biology, University of Virginia
Research Interests: Coastal systems' resilience to climate change, seagrass restoration, microplastic pollution, salt marsh stability, and carbon dynamics. She employs theoretical and empirical approaches to inform conservation strategies.
Team and Collaborations: Leads the Novak Lab, collaborating with researchers like Dr. Jon Lefcheck (University of Maryland) and Dr. John Finnerty (BU). Current team members include Postdoc Rachel Schaefer, Lecturer Karina Scavo Lord, and M.S. student Charley Mitchell. Past advisees span over a decade, contributing to fieldwork and restoration projects.
Labs/Teams: Active in Boston University Coastal Lab and the Great Marsh Partnership, promoting interdisciplinary coastal research and management.
