Brett Mills is an Honorary Professor at the School of Media, Language and Communication Studies at the University of East Anglia (UEA), where he has worked since 2006. He previously held roles at the University of Glamorgan and the Open University. He earned his PhD in 2000 from the University of Kent, focusing on television sitcom analysis.
His research centers on popular television, particularly under-researched genres like comedy, panel shows, and wildlife documentaries. Notable projects include the AHRC-funded 'Make Me Laugh' (2012-2014), exploring British TV comedy creativity, and studies on animal representation in media. His work on animal narratives in wildlife documentaries gained international media attention.
Brett has authored/co-authored influential books like Television Sitcom (2005) and Reading Media Theory (2012), and contributed to journals such as European Journal of Cultural Studies and Environmental Communication. He serves on editorial boards for Critical Studies in Television and Journal of Popular Television, and has been an external examiner for multiple universities' media programs.
He actively engages with public media through contributions to BBC Radio 2, BBC4, and other platforms, discussing topics like sitcom history and television comedy. Brett supervises PhD students in areas including comedy studies, media theory, and animal representation.
