Brent Johnston is a Professor and Department Head in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at Dalhousie University, Faculty of Medicine. His research focuses on immune cell development, homing, and activation, particularly investigating NKT cells' role in autoimmunity and anti-tumour responses. He holds a BSc and PhD from the University of Calgary, with postdoctoral training at Stanford University.
Research interests include cancer immunology, cytokine/chemokine regulation, and inflammatory mechanisms. Recent work emphasizes combining natural killer T (NKT) cell immunotherapy with oncolytic viruses and immune checkpoint inhibitors to combat pancreatic and breast cancers. His studies also explore Pseudomonas aeruginosa lung infections and γδ T cell functions.
Key publications highlight synergistic therapeutic approaches targeting metastatic cancers and inflammatory diseases. Awards include a Canada Research Chair (2004–2014) and the David T. Janigan Teaching Award (2011). His work bridges basic immunology with translational cancer therapies, emphasizing NKT cell biology and chemokine receptor pathways.
