Michael Uhlin is an Adjunct Professor at Karolinska Institutet's Department of Medicine, Huddinge, where he leads the Therapeutic Immunology and Transfusion Medicine research group. His primary position is Head of the Division of Clinical Immunology at Karolinska University Hospital. He obtained his Doctor of Philosophy (2006) and Docent (2012) degrees from Karolinska Institutet.
Uhlin's research focuses on T-cell immunology, with emphasis on unconventional γδ T cells and their role in cancer immunity. His work bridges basic immunology with clinical applications, particularly in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), tumor immunology (ovarian/prostate cancer, AML), and transfusion medicine. Key investigations include γδ T-cell reconstitution post-HSCT, tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes in solid tumors, and bispecific T-cell engager therapies.
His publications demonstrate consistent focus on translational immunology, with recent emphasis on: 1) γδ T-cell biology in transplantation and cancer, 2) Novel immunotherapies (bispecific antibodies, oncolytic viruses), and 3) Blood product optimization. This reflects a multidisciplinary approach spanning immunotherapy development, lymphocyte characterization, and clinical hematology.
As group leader, he mentors doctoral students including Faisal Alagrafi and Anna Cecilia Söderström. His research is supported by grants from Barncancerfonden, Vetenskapsrådet, Cancerfonden, Cancerföreningen Radiumhemmet, and ALF-Stockholm. The lab utilizes clinical samples and advanced methodologies to investigate lymphocyte function in cancer and transplantation settings.
