Brenda R. Weber is a Provost Professor in the Department of Gender Studies at Indiana University Bloomington's College of Arts & Sciences. She serves as the Director of the College Arts and Humanities Institute and holds the Jean C. Robinson Scholar position within Gender Studies. Professor Weber is also affiliated with multiple departments and institutes including American Studies, the Center for the Research of Race and Ethnicity in Society, Cultural Studies, English, The Kinsey Institute, and The Media School.
Professor Weber earned her Ph.D. from Miami University (Oxford) in 2001. Her academic journey has led her to become a prominent scholar in gender studies with interdisciplinary connections across multiple fields.
Professor Weber's research engages with a wide archive of mostly discredited cultural texts, including non-canonical 19th-century transatlantic women's literature and contemporary media such as literature, film, and television. She examines how identity is discursively gendered, constructed, and embodied through written and mediated means, with particular focus on how gender, sex, sexuality, race, and class work together to inform notions of the "normative" self. Her work consistently explores themes of celebrity, masculinity, and American religious cultures across various media platforms.
Professor Weber's publications reveal a consistent trajectory examining gender representation across different media forms and historical periods. Her scholarship moves from 19th-century women's literature to contemporary reality television, film, and celebrity culture, with particular attention to how marginalized identities navigate normative expectations. A significant thread throughout her work is the examination of embodiment and how bodies become sites of cultural negotiation, particularly regarding gender and sexuality. Her recent work focuses increasingly on Mormon media representations and queer theory applications to contemporary American culture.
