Bradley Buszard is a Professor in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures at Christopher Newport University. His expertise lies in classical antiquity, with a focus on Roman and Greek cultures, linguistics, and historiography. His research emphasizes the translation of Latin terms into Greek, particularly through his GRETL project, which explores linguistic adaptations in ancient texts. He teaches courses on Roman attitudes toward Greek literature, Greek perspectives on Roman hegemony, and gender norms in antiquity.
Education: Ph.D. and M.A. in Classical Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; B.A. in Classical Studies from the University of Michigan.
Research interests include ancient biography, Roman-Greek cultural exchange, and the intersection of language and identity. His publications analyze Plutarch’s works, Roman magistracies, and Greek translations of Roman religious and political terminology. The GRETL database, accessible at buszard.cnu.edu, serves as a key resource for scholars studying these topics.
Teaching highlights include CLST 202 (Roman attitudes toward Greek literature), CLST 415 (Greek views of Roman political dominance), and CLST 313 (ancient gender norms). He also examines constitutional systems in antiquity and their influence on the U.S. Constitution in CLST 414.
Buszard’s work bridges interdisciplinary fields, combining historiography, linguistics, and cultural studies to illuminate the complexities of ancient Mediterranean interactions.
