Luke Gorton is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Classics at the University of New Mexico, within the Language, Culture, and Literature (LCL) program. He teaches courses in Greek and Latin language and literature, as well as ancient religions and cultures from his offices in Ortega 315C and Humanities 457, holding appointments via in-person or Zoom sessions.
His academic credentials include:
- Ph.D. in Classics, The Ohio State University, Columbus (2014). Certificate: Religions of the Ancient Mediterranean. Dissertation: "Through the Grapevine: Tracing the Origins of Wine".
Dr. Gorton's research interests span Greek and Latin Language and Literature, Religions of the Ancient Mediterranean, Contacts Between Greece and Near Eastern Literatures and Cultures, and Indo-European Linguistics. Additionally, he investigates Second Temple Judaism and Early Christianity through interdisciplinary lenses connecting linguistic, religious, and cultural frameworks. His teaching portfolio includes Greek Mythology (CLST 107), Advanced Classical Latin (LATN 303-304), Advanced Ancient Greek (GREK 301-302), and specialized topics in Greek Literature and Culture (CLST 333-334/RELG 347), with focused modules on Magic in Ancient Religion, Sex and Gender in Ancient Religion, and Apocalypse in the Ancient World, alongside Introduction to Christian Scriptures (RELG 232).
