Mark A. Beck is an Associate Professor of Classics in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of South Carolina’s College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on Plutarch’s works, ancient Greek literature, and intertextuality in classical texts. He holds a Ph.D. in Classics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1998), an M.A. in Greek and Latin Literature from Georg-August Universität (Göttingen, Germany, 1993), and dual B.A. degrees in Classics and Psychology from the University of Colorado at Boulder (1981/1984).
Beck’s scholarship emphasizes Plutarch’s literary techniques and ideological frameworks, particularly in analyzing leadership, moral philosophy, and political narratives. His edited volumes include A Companion to Plutarch (2014) and contributions to Brill’s and Cambridge University Press series. His recent work explores Plutarch’s portrayal of 'Great Men,' Roman political culture, and the Socratic paradigm in ancient biography.
He has held a prestigious APA/NEH Thesaurus linguae Latinae Postdoctoral Fellowship (2000-2001). His publications span 20+ years, with a focus on classical biography, intertextual analysis, and ancient rhetorical traditions. Current research trends include examining spatial/temporal structures in Plutarch’s Lives and the reception of Socratic thought in late antiquity.
His teaching emphasizes Greek language and literature, alongside thematic courses on leadership and combat in the ancient world. Though no specific grants or labs are noted, his work contributes to interdisciplinary dialogues between classical studies and modern narrative theory.
