Mark Heerink is a Visiting Fellow in the Faculty of Humanities at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, specializing in Hellenistic Greek and Roman poetry. His research focuses on applying modern theories of intertextuality and metapoetics to classical poetry. He authored Echoing Hylas: A Study in Hellenistic and Roman Metapoetics (2015) and co-edited Brill's Companion to Valerius Flaccus (2014). He completed a VENI research project on Valerius Flaccus' Argonautica (funded by NWO), and is currently revising the Loeb Classical Library edition of Valerius Flaccus. His work explores themes like poetic tradition, epic dynamics, and the intersection of ancient and modern literary theory.
Key areas of research include Roman epic poetry, intertextual analysis, and the poetics of Valerius Flaccus. He has published extensively on topics such as Dido's portrayal in Flavian epic, Ovidian exile narratives, and the application of intertextuality in classical literature. Awards include the prestigious VENI grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO).
