Bonnie Lewis is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at the University of Delaware, where she also coordinates the Social Studies Education Program. She holds a BA in History and an M.Ed in Secondary Social Studies Education from the University of Kentucky, followed by four years of high school teaching experience. In 2023, she earned her Ph.D. in Social Studies Curriculum & Instruction from the University of Kentucky. Her research focuses on inquiry-based approaches to social studies education, particularly in navigating contentious topics and fostering deliberative classroom environments. She emphasizes the College, Career, and Civic (C3) Life Framework and the Inquiry Design Model to support in-service and pre-service teachers in implementing effective curricula.
Her work addresses critical issues such as textbook representation, deliberative learning strategies, and the challenges of teaching controversial subjects. Recent publications explore topics like formative tasks in deliberation, textbook portrayals of social democratic reforms, and countering simplistic historical narratives. Lewis actively contributes to teacher education by bridging theoretical frameworks with practical classroom applications.
