Barry Joyce is a Professor and Co-Coordinator of the History/Social Studies Secondary Education program at the University of Delaware (UD). He earned his Ph.D. in American History from the University of California, Riverside in 1995. Since 2000, he has directed UD’s nationally ranked Social Studies Education Program, recognized by the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS). Joyce leads the Delaware Council for History Education (DCHE), promoting inclusive curricula, and oversees federal Library of Congress grants focused on Indigenous and Latinx Delaware history and addressing omissions in U.S. narratives.
His research explores American West history, Native American history, and textbook historiography. His recent book examines 19th-century U.S. history textbooks, while ongoing projects investigate shared sacred spaces in the American Southwest. He teaches courses in American History, Native American Studies, and Social Studies Education.
Prof. Joyce actively engages with K-12 schools, observing classrooms and providing teacher professional development. His grants support Delaware educators through workshops addressing historical inaccuracies and underrepresented narratives.
