Johnson's research focuses on the intersection of literature, botany, and cultural history, with particular expertise in Renaissance literature and Shakespeare studies. Her work explores botanical culture in early modern England, Catholic women writers, and the symbolic significance of plants in literary contexts. She has developed significant scholarship examining chastity in Early Stuart literature, blood symbolism in Shakespeare's works, and the relationship between gardens and political allegory in Renaissance drama. Her recent projects demonstrate an evolving interest in environmental humanities and the emerging field of plant studies within literary criticism.
Johnson's publication record reveals a distinctive scholarly trajectory moving from traditional literary criticism toward interdisciplinary approaches that bridge literary studies with environmental humanities, religious studies, and cultural history. Her monographs, particularly Botanical Culture and Popular Belief in Shakespeare's England and Chastity in Early Stuart Literature and Culture, establish her as a leading voice in Renaissance literary studies with a unique focus on material culture. Her editorial work on the Cambridge Handbook of Literature and Plants and Oxford Handbook of Modern Catholic Women Writers demonstrates her commitment to expanding scholarly conversations in these specialized areas. Notably, Johnson maintains an active parallel career as a creative writer with publications in prestigious literary journals.
Johnson has been shortlisted for the Royal Literary Society V.S Pritchett Prize (2021) and the Brick Lane Bookshop Short Story Award (2022) for her short story 'Idolatry,' demonstrating recognition for her creative work alongside her academic scholarship.

She teaches specialized courses on Renaissance literature and mentors students working on dissertations in early modern literary studies. Her involvement with the college literary magazine, The Leaves, provides additional opportunities for student engagement beyond the formal curriculum. Johnson frequently collaborates with other scholars, as evidenced by her co-authored publications with researchers like Julia Meszaros, Eleanor Decamp, and Myles O'Gorman, creating a network of academic partnerships that extend across institutions.
Johnson maintains an active presence across multiple academic communities as a Fellow at both Downing College, Cambridge, and Blackfriars, Oxford, positioning her at the intersection of literary scholarship, religious studies, and environmental humanities. Her work with Catholic women writers through critical editions published by CUA Press demonstrates her commitment to recovering and promoting underrepresented voices in literary history.
